Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow Airport as Europe’s busiest aviation hub, with passenger figures from July revealing the switch in rankings. During that month, Istanbul Airport welcomed 8.15 million passengers, while Heathrow saw 7.86 million, marking a notable shift in the European airport landscape.
Heathrow experienced a 1.5% decline in passenger numbers compared to the same period last year, a decrease partly attributed to disruptions stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. In contrast, Istanbul Airport saw a 2.3% increase in traffic, highlighting its growing prominence. This development has intensified calls for the UK government to greenlight Heathrow’s proposed third runway, a £33 billion expansion project aimed at boosting the airport’s capacity to approximately 150 million passengers annually.
The latest passenger statistics underscore the pressing need for additional capacity at Heathrow, according to the airport, which argues that expanding its facilities is crucial for enhancing the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism. Currently, Heathrow operates with two runways that are nearly at full capacity, constraining its ability to meet growing demand.
Opened in 2018, Istanbul Airport boasts a larger site and operates continuously with three runways, and a fourth runway is expected to be operational by the end of 2026. Its extensive facilities and strategic location have contributed to its rapid rise as a major international travel hub.
Amid these shifts in airport rankings, other UK airports like London Stansted and Manchester have reported record-breaking passenger numbers in July, handling 3.1 million and 3.4 million travelers, respectively. These figures highlight the robustness of air travel demand within the UK, despite the challenges faced by its largest airport.
